If ingrown hairs, razor bumps, and constant shaving are part of your routine, laser hair removal can offer more than convenience. By gradually reducing hair growth, it may also help reduce some of the irritation associated with frequent shaving.
But what you do after your laser hair removal appointment matters.
Proper aftercare helps keep your skin comfortable while it recovers and can reduce unnecessary irritation around the treated follicles. At Purple Basil Medspa & Wellness in Frisco, we provide aftercare instructions based on the treatment area, your skin, and your individual treatment plan.
Here’s what to know after your session.
What Is Normal After Laser Hair Removal?
Some temporary redness, warmth, or mild sensitivity around the treated follicles can occur after laser hair removal. The skin may look or feel similar to a mild sunburn for a short period.
During this time, the goal is simple: keep the skin cool, clean, protected, and free from unnecessary irritation.
Avoid picking, scratching, aggressively rubbing, or exfoliating freshly treated skin.
If you experience a reaction that seems unusual, severe, blistering, or progressively worsening rather than improving, contact your provider for guidance.
The First 24–48 Hours After Treatment
Your skin may be more sensitive immediately following treatment, so this isn’t the time for aggressive skincare.
Use gentle products and avoid introducing new active ingredients to the treated area.
Depending on your provider’s instructions, you may also need to temporarily avoid:
-
Hot baths, hot tubs, and saunas
-
Excessive heat
-
Strenuous exercise that causes significant sweating
-
Scrubs and exfoliating products
-
Retinoids, acids, or other irritating skincare ingredients on the treated area
-
Friction from tight clothing
A cool compress can be used for temporary comfort if the area feels warm.
Your provider may give you slightly different instructions depending on the area being treated, so always follow your individualized post-care directions.
Can Laser Hair Removal Help With Ingrown Hairs?
It can.
Ingrown hairs often develop when a hair grows back into the skin instead of outward. Shaving, waxing, friction, and naturally coarse or curly hair can contribute to the problem.
Laser hair removal works differently from shaving. Rather than simply cutting the hair at the skin’s surface, treatment targets pigment associated with the hair follicle to progressively reduce hair growth.
As the amount and coarseness of hair decrease over a series of treatments, some patients may experience fewer shaving-related bumps and ingrown hairs.
However, laser hair removal should be described as long-term hair reduction, not guaranteed permanent hair removal.
Don’t Pick or Dig Out Ingrown Hairs
It can be tempting to pick at a bump when you see a trapped hair underneath it.
Don’t.
Picking, squeezing, or attempting to dig out the hair can increase inflammation and may increase the risk of discoloration, infection, or scarring.
Give your skin time to recover after your laser hair removal session. If you regularly experience painful or inflamed ingrown hairs, discuss them with your provider rather than treating them aggressively at home.
When Can You Exfoliate After Laser Hair Removal?
Not immediately.
Freshly treated skin needs time to settle before exfoliation is reintroduced. Once the skin has returned to normal and your provider has cleared you to do so, gentle exfoliation may help remove accumulated dead skin cells.
This can also be useful as treated hairs begin to shed.
The key word is gentle.
Avoid aggressively scrubbing the area in an attempt to make hairs fall out faster. The treated hairs will shed naturally over time.
Can You Shave Between Laser Hair Removal Sessions?
Generally, shaving is the preferred method of managing visible hair between sessions once the skin is comfortable and your provider says it is appropriate.
Avoid methods that remove the hair from the follicle between treatments, such as waxing or plucking. Laser treatments depend on the hair follicle being available to target during subsequent sessions.
Your treatment team will tell you when to shave before your next appointment.
Sun Protection Is Especially Important
Sun exposure is an important consideration before and after laser hair removal.
Recently treated skin should be protected from unnecessary UV exposure, and tanning can affect whether it is safe to proceed with a future treatment.
This is particularly relevant in Frisco and North Texas, where significant sun exposure can continue well beyond the summer months.
Follow your provider’s instructions regarding sun avoidance and use appropriate broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed treated areas.
Always tell your provider if you’ve recently tanned or had significant sun exposure before your next laser appointment.
Why Multiple Laser Hair Removal Sessions Are Needed
Hair does not grow in one synchronized cycle.
Laser treatment is most effective when hairs are in an appropriate active growth phase, but only a portion of the hairs in an area are in that phase at any given appointment.
That’s why laser hair removal is performed as a series of treatments rather than a single session.
Over time, the goal is progressively less hair growth and finer, less noticeable regrowth.
Your recommended number of sessions and treatment intervals will depend on factors including the area being treated, hair characteristics, and your individual response.

Who Is a Candidate for Laser Hair Removal at Purple Basil?
At Purple Basil Medspa & Wellness, our current laser hair removal protocol is for Fitzpatrick Skin Types I–IV.
Candidacy isn’t determined from a blog article alone. Your provider evaluates your skin type, hair characteristics, treatment area, recent sun exposure, and other relevant factors before determining whether treatment is appropriate.
This individualized assessment is an important part of providing laser treatments safely.
