What Should I Expect After an IPL Photofacial?

One of the most common questions we hear from clients considering IPL is: What will my skin look like after an IPL photofacial?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is commonly used to improve the appearance of sun damage, brown spots, uneven pigmentation, redness, and certain visible blood vessels. While IPL typically requires relatively little downtime, your skin can go through some noticeable changes after treatment—especially when pigmentation is being targeted.

At Purple Basil Medspa in Frisco, TX, we want clients to know what is normal after IPL, what to avoid, and how to care for their skin while it recovers.

What Will My Skin Look Like Right After IPL?

Immediately after an IPL photofacial, your skin may look slightly red or feel warm, similar to a mild sunburn.

Depending on your skin and the area treated, you may notice:

  • Mild redness
  • Warmth or sensitivity
  • Slight swelling
  • Darkening of existing brown spots
  • More noticeable pigmentation

These changes can be part of the normal response to IPL and generally improve as the skin recovers.

Why Do My Brown Spots Look Darker After IPL?

Don’t be surprised if some brown spots temporarily look darker after IPL.

IPL delivers light energy that is absorbed by targeted pigment. After treatment, areas of pigmentation may darken before gradually moving toward the surface and naturally flaking away.

This temporary darkening does not necessarily mean your pigmentation is getting worse.

Avoid picking, scratching, or trying to exfoliate the darkened areas away. Allow them to shed naturally.

How Long Does It Take for Brown Spots to Flake Off After IPL?

The exact timeline varies from person to person and depends on the area treated and the amount of pigmentation present.

Over the days following treatment, targeted brown spots may develop a darker, speckled appearance before gradually fading or flaking.

Some clients describe the appearance as tiny coffee-ground-like spots on the surface of the skin.

Be patient with this process. Scrubbing or aggressively exfoliating the skin can cause unnecessary irritation.

Can I Wear Makeup After an IPL Photofacial?

Your provider will give you post-treatment instructions based on how your skin responds.

In general, it’s best to keep freshly treated skin calm and avoid applying anything irritating immediately after treatment. Once your skin has settled and your provider has cleared you to do so, you can typically return to your normal makeup routine.

If the skin remains particularly red, sensitive, swollen, or irritated, give it additional time before applying makeup.

Can I Exercise After IPL?

We generally recommend avoiding strenuous exercise immediately after IPL.

Exercise increases body temperature and blood flow, which can contribute to additional warmth, flushing, or irritation in recently treated skin.

Depending on your treatment and skin response, your provider may recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for several days.

Follow the individualized aftercare instructions you receive at your appointment before returning to intense workouts, saunas, steam rooms, or other activities that significantly heat the skin.

Can I Go in the Sun After IPL?

Sun protection is extremely important after an IPL photofacial.

Recently treated skin can be more vulnerable to UV exposure, and excessive sun exposure can increase the risk of unwanted pigmentation changes.

After treatment:

  • Minimize direct sun exposure
  • Wear protective clothing when appropriate
  • Use broad-spectrum sunscreen as directed
  • Avoid intentionally tanning
  • Do not use tanning beds

Good sun protection doesn’t just help during recovery—it can also help protect your results from new sun damage.

What Skincare Should I Avoid After IPL?

Your skincare routine should be gentle while your skin recovers.

Your provider may recommend temporarily avoiding potentially irritating products such as:

  • Retinoids
  • AHAs and BHAs
  • Strong exfoliating acids
  • Physical scrubs
  • Other aggressive active ingredients

Instead, focus on gentle cleansing, appropriate hydration, and the post-treatment products recommended by your provider.

Don’t rush to restart active skincare simply because your skin looks normal. Follow the timeline provided after your treatment.

Can I Pick or Exfoliate the Dark Spots After IPL?

No.

It can be tempting to exfoliate when pigmentation begins to darken or flake, but let the skin shed naturally.

Picking, scratching, scrubbing, or aggressively exfoliating treated areas may irritate the skin and interfere with normal healing.

Think of the days following IPL as a time to protect your skin rather than accelerate the process.

When Will I See Results From IPL?

IPL results develop gradually.

Some changes may become noticeable as treated pigmentation darkens and sheds, while improvement in overall tone can continue as the skin settles.

The timeline depends on what is being treated, how much pigmentation or redness is present, and how your individual skin responds.

IPL isn’t necessarily a one-treatment solution. Some clients benefit from a series of treatments to achieve their desired improvement.

How Many IPL Treatments Will I Need?

There is no universal number of IPL sessions that’s right for everyone.

Your treatment plan depends on factors including:

  • Your skin type
  • The concern being treated
  • The amount of sun damage or pigmentation
  • The degree of redness
  • Your response to previous treatments
  • Your treatment goals

At Purple Basil Medspa, we recommend treatment frequency based on your individual skin rather than automatically putting every client on the same schedule.

Is It Normal to Have Redness After IPL?

Some temporary redness or warmth can occur following treatment.

However, there is a difference between an expected post-treatment response and a reaction that should be evaluated.

We provide aftercare instructions so you know what to expect. If you experience a reaction that seems unusual, severe, or significantly different from what your provider described, contact the practice for guidance.

How Can I Get the Best Results From My IPL Treatment?

What you do between treatments matters.

Protecting your skin from the sun, following your aftercare instructions, avoiding unnecessary irritation, and maintaining an appropriate skincare routine can all help support your treatment plan.

It is also important to tell your provider about changes to your medications, skincare products, tanning or sun exposure before subsequent IPL sessions.

Is IPL Right for My Skin?

If you’re still researching IPL, remember that aftercare is only one part of the process. Determining whether IPL is appropriate for your skin in the first place is equally important.

Skin tone, recent tanning, medications, the type of pigmentation present, and your treatment goals all influence whether IPL is the right choice.

At Purple Basil Medspa in Frisco, we evaluate these factors before recommending IPL treatment.
