Should I Get Microneedling or RF Microneedling?

If you’re researching treatments for acne scars, enlarged pores, uneven texture, fine lines, or skin laxity, you may be wondering: Should I get traditional microneedling or RF microneedling?

Both treatments create controlled micro-injuries that stimulate the skin’s natural repair response, but they aren’t exactly the same. RF microneedling adds radiofrequency energy, allowing us to address concerns differently than traditional microneedling alone.

At Purple Basil Medspa in Frisco, TX, we offer both SkinPen® microneedling and Venus Viva™ RF microneedling. Rather than assuming one is automatically “better,” we look at your skin, concerns, downtime preferences, and treatment goals to determine which option makes more sense.

What Is the Difference Between Microneedling and RF Microneedling?

Traditional microneedling uses very small needles to create controlled microchannels in the skin. This triggers a natural wound-healing response and supports collagen and elastin production.

RF microneedling combines controlled skin resurfacing with radiofrequency energy. With Venus Viva, energy is delivered into the skin to create controlled thermal effects that support remodeling.

The easiest way to think about the difference is:

Microneedling = controlled micro-injury

RF microneedling = controlled skin resurfacing + radiofrequency energy

Which one you need depends on what you’re trying to improve.

What Does Traditional Microneedling Help With?

Traditional microneedling can be a good option for clients concerned about:

  • Acne scars
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Enlarged pores
  • Fine lines
  • Overall skin quality
  • Mild textural irregularities

At Purple Basil Medspa, we use SkinPen, an FDA-cleared microneedling device.

SkinPen can be especially appealing when your primary goal is improving texture and stimulating collagen without adding radiofrequency energy.

What Does RF Microneedling Help With?

RF microneedling may be considered when concerns include:

  • Acne scarring
  • Uneven texture
  • Fine lines
  • Enlarged pores
  • Signs of skin aging
  • Skin laxity
  • Overall skin remodeling

Because RF microneedling incorporates radiofrequency energy, it can be useful when we’re looking for more than surface-level textural improvement.

That doesn’t mean every client needs RF. More technology isn’t automatically better—the treatment still needs to match your concern.

Which Is Better for Acne Scars: Microneedling or RF Microneedling?

Both may be options for acne scarring, depending on the type and severity of the scars.

Acne scars aren’t all the same. Their depth, shape, age, and distribution can influence which treatment is appropriate.

For some clients, SkinPen microneedling may provide an appropriate collagen-stimulating approach. For others with more significant textural concerns, Venus Viva RF microneedling may be considered.

An in-person evaluation allows us to look at the scars rather than recommending a treatment based only on the words “acne scarring.”

Which Is Better for Skin Tightening?

If skin laxity or tightening is one of your main concerns, RF-based treatment may be more suitable than traditional microneedling alone—but this depends on individual evaluation rather than the concern alone.

Radiofrequency energy creates controlled heat within the treated tissue, which is why RF technology is commonly incorporated into treatment plans focused on collagen remodeling and firmness.

Purple Basil also offers DiamondPolar™ skin tightening, another radiofrequency-based option that may be considered when tightening is the primary goal without microneedling.

Your provider can help determine whether resurfacing, tightening, or a combination approach better matches what you’re seeing in the mirror.

Which Is Better for Enlarged Pores and Uneven Texture?

Both treatments can be considered for enlarged pores and uneven texture.

The better choice depends on how significant the texture concerns are, whether other concerns such as acne scars or laxity are present, and how aggressive of a treatment plan is appropriate for your skin.

This is one reason we don’t recommend choosing between SkinPen and RF microneedling based solely on a before-and-after photo you saw online.

Does RF Microneedling Hurt More Than Regular Microneedling?

Both treatments involve controlled treatment of the skin, so some discomfort is possible.

The sensation and intensity can differ because RF microneedling adds radiofrequency energy to the treatment.

Before your procedure, we’ll explain what you can expect and the comfort measures appropriate for your treatment.

Individual experiences vary, so someone else’s description of how a procedure felt may not predict your experience.

Which Treatment Has More Downtime?

Downtime varies depending on the treatment performed, treatment intensity, area treated, and individual skin response.

Following traditional microneedling, temporary redness, sensitivity, and a sunburn-like appearance can occur.

RF microneedling can also cause redness, warmth, sensitivity, and temporary changes in the appearance or texture of the treated skin.

Your provider will give you specific post-treatment instructions based on the procedure performed.

If you have an important event coming up, tell us during your consultation so we can discuss treatment timing and expected recovery.

How Many Microneedling Treatments Will I Need?

There isn’t one treatment schedule that applies to everyone.

The number of sessions depends on:

  • Your primary concern
  • Severity of acne scarring or texture
  • Your skin’s response
  • The treatment selected
  • Your desired outcome

Some clients may benefit from a series of treatments rather than a single session.

We recommend a treatment plan based on your skin instead of automatically recommending the same package to every client.

Is RF Microneedling Better Because It Is More Advanced?

Not necessarily.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions when comparing aesthetic treatments.

A more intensive treatment isn’t automatically the right treatment—the right treatment is the one that aligns with your individual concerns and skin type.

If your concern can appropriately be addressed with traditional microneedling, adding RF may not be necessary. On the other hand, if we’re addressing more significant texture, scarring, or laxity, RF microneedling may provide advantages that make it a better fit.

The goal is not to choose the treatment with the most technology. It’s to choose the treatment that appropriately addresses your concern, your skin, and your goals.

Can All Skin Types Get Microneedling or RF Microneedling?

Skin type is an important part of treatment planning.

Unlike IPL, which relies on light interacting with pigment and requires particular consideration of skin tone and tanning, microneedling treatments work differently.

However, that does not mean every treatment is appropriate for every person.

Your provider should evaluate your Fitzpatrick skin type, medical history, medications, active skin conditions, and history of abnormal scarring before treatment.

Can I Combine Microneedling With Other Treatments?

Sometimes.

A comprehensive treatment plan may use different treatments to address different concerns. For example, pigmentation, redness, texture, wrinkles, and laxity don’t necessarily respond to the same technology.

Purple Basil Medspa offers treatments including IPL photofacial, DiamondPolar skin tightening, professional chemical peels, HydraFacial®, and injectable treatments in addition to microneedling.

Combination treatment plans should be appropriately spaced and selected based on your individual skin rather than simply stacking procedures together. At Purple Basil Medspa, we don’t choose between SkinPen and Venus Viva simply based on which treatment is more intensive. We start with what you want to improve. For concerns focused primarily on texture, pores, fine lines, or certain acne scars, SkinPen may be considered. When more significant texture, acne scarring, or skin laxity is part of the concern, we may consider Venus Viva RF microneedling. We also evaluate your skin type, treatment history, downtime preferences, and relevant medical considerations before recommending a treatment plan. If neither option is the best match for your concern, we’ll tell you that too.

How Do I Decide Between SkinPen and Venus Viva?

Ask yourself what you’re primarily trying to improve.

If you’re mainly concerned about texture, pores, fine lines, or certain acne scars, SkinPen microneedling may be worth considering.

If you have more significant textural concerns, acne scarring, or laxity and could benefit from the addition of radiofrequency energy, Venus Viva RF microneedling may be considered.

You don’t need to decide before your consultation.

In fact, that’s the purpose of an aesthetic consultation: tell us what bothers you, and we’ll help determine which technology makes the most sense.

Where Can I Get Microneedling or RF Microneedling in Frisco, TX?

At Purple Basil Medspa in Frisco, TX, we offer both SkinPen microneedling and Venus Viva RF microneedling, allowing us to recommend a treatment based on your skin rather than offering only one option.

We’ll evaluate your skin and help you determine which treatment—or treatment plan—best aligns with your goals.
